AI, Smart Retail and Humanoid Robotics for the Aquarium Industry
The next interface for specialized knowledge
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly moving from computers and smartphones into the physical world. Smart terminals, voice assistants and the new generation of humanoid robots are creating new possibilities for retail and professional services. For specialized industries such as aquatics, however, the hardware alone is not enough.A robot can move, speak and interact. To become a useful professional assistant, it must also understand the sector in which it operates.
Specialized AI as the intelligence behind future interfaces
TAF is exploring how vertical Artificial Intelligence developed for professional aquatics could eventually interact with new physical interfaces.
A specialized digital assistant could support customers and staff inside an aquarium store by helping them access information about:
- aquarium livestock
- species compatibility
- products and equipment
- aquarium maintenance
- professional procedures
- responsible animal care
- store services and product ranges
Today this intelligence can operate through a digital assistant.
Tomorrow the same knowledge architecture could support interactive kiosks, voice systems, smart stores and humanoid robotic assistants.
The role of Artificial Intelligence is not to replace professional staff, but to support people with faster access to specialized knowledge and operational information.

From digital assistant to intelligent retail
The development path can be seen as a natural evolution:
Specialized knowledge → Vertical AI → Digital assistant → Smart retail → Robotic interface
The purpose is not to create technology simply because it is new.
Technology becomes valuable when it helps transfer knowledge, improve service and support the people working inside a specialized business.
Human experience remains central.
Artificial Intelligence and future robotic interfaces are conceived as tools working alongside professionals, helping them access information, assist customers and manage increasingly complex environments.
Charlie as an experimental platform
Charlie, developed within the TAF innovation project, represents our first practical platform for exploring this concept.
The project starts in the professional aquarium sector, where specialized knowledge is essential, but the underlying approach may also offer insights for other technical and specialist retail environments.
Charlie is designed to preserve and organize sector knowledge while supporting the work of experienced professionals.
The future of humanoid robotics will not depend only on better machines.
It will also depend on giving those machines real, structured and sector-specific intelligence, while keeping people at the centre of decision-making, responsibility and customer relationships.
Human expertise remains at the centre
The robot may be the interface.
Specialized knowledge is the real intelligence.
And professional experience remains the foundation on which that intelligence is built.
